School of Public Health

The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) maintains two campuses and two teaching hospitals in the city of New Orleans. It serves over 2,500 students and offers over 30 degree programs through its six schools. Dedicated to the advancement of public health and well-being in Louisiana, this institution’s mission includes education, research and service. LSUHC’s School of Public Health offers master and doctoral degrees and prepares its graduates for careers in healthcare management.

Master of Public Health

LSUHC’s Master of Public Health (MPH) students can choose from five concentrations including behavioral and community health sciences, health policy, biostatistics, environmental and occupational health sciences, and systems management and epidemiology. The program provides a core foundation in public health and health care systems. Its competency-based curriculum combines practice experience with coursework. Students complete 45 credits including 23 credits of core courses, 19 credits in their chosen concentration and a 3-credit capstone course. Core course subjects include principles of epidemiology, principles of environmental health, health services administration and management, public health ethics, behavioral science theories and statistics and biostatistics.

Tulane University

School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine

Established in 1834, Tulane University occupies a 110-acre campus in New Orleans. Tulane serves over 13,000 students and offers over 75 degree options through its ten schools. Opened in 1912, Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine is the country’s oldest school of public health. U.S. News and World Report ranks it the 12th public health school in the country.

Master of Public Health

Accredited public health degree programs in Louisiana also include Tulane’s Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. This program prepares its graduates for leadership positions in the public health arena. Its curriculum incorporates a multidisciplinary approach that provides a solid foundation in behavioral science, biostatics, epidemiology, environmental health and management. The degree requires completion of 42 to 45 credits, and students can select from nine concentrations including Community Health Sciences, Disaster Management, Epidemiology, Health Education and Communication, Health Policy, Health Systems Management, International Health and Development, Nutrition and Maternal and Child Health. Graduates complete 18 core credits plus a practicum of at least 200 hours in length as well as a culminating experience that integrates classroom experience with the principles acquired in practice settings. Additional credit requirements vary with the student’s chosen concentration. Students must complete three-fourths of their credit requirements at Tulane.
