For those looking to advance their careers in the growing healthcare industry, whether through undergraduate or graduate study, there are two accredited healthcare administration degree programs in Maine worth considering. Both are offered by the University of Southern Maine, a comprehensive university with campuses in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston-Auburn. Central to USM's mission is "fostering a spirit of critical inquiry and civic participation" as part of the educational process, and the school is known for its commitment to academic freedom, diversity, environmental stewardship, and community involvement.

College of Science, Technology, and Health

The College of Science, Technology, and Health is comprised of three departments: the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the School of Exercise, Health, and Sport Sciences, and the School of Nursing. The College is committed to a philosophy of "engaged learning," whereby students are encouraged to participate in a host of learning experiences, such as internships, service projects, capstone projects, and learning communities, that extend beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom.

BS in Health Sciences in Health Care Administration

Offered through the Department of Exercise, Health, and Sport Sciences, the BS in Health Sciences involves an undergraduate core component, a health sciences core, and a health care administration track. Students complete 40 credits in the USM core, which includes courses in writing, mathematics, social sciences, art and culture, and ethics. The core also features courses in a "thematic cluster" that reflects a student's particular area of interest. The health sciences core involves 36 credits, including a 3-credit capstone project. Core requirements include introductory courses in psychology, chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology, statistics, nutrition, community health, and sports and wellness. Finally, students complete a 30-credit health care administration track, which involves courses in accounting, economics, management, and other topics focusing on the business and management dimension of the healthcare industry.

Located on USM's Portland campus, the School of Business offers bachelor's, master's, and certificate programs in a variety of business disciplines. The school's stated mission is to provide "quality learning opportunities, valuable research, and professional service, all in partnership with the business community." MBA in Business Administration in Health Management & Policy Concentration

The Health Management and Policy concentration within the MBA program is designed to give students a broad understanding of the American health care system, its structure and financing, both public and private, and current social, political, and legal issues surrounding health care delivery. Students complete coursework in the 30-credit MBA core curriculum, which includes accounting, management, economics, finance, marketing, international business, and business ethics. They then fulfill a 9-credit requirement in the concentration, with courses covering the American healthcare system and quality improvement, and the choice of an elective in healthcare ethics and law or public health.
